The Game
A refined exploration of geometry and structure, this chair balances playful simplicity with intentional design, all quietly guided by the number four.
While designing a chair, I had countless ideas I wanted to explore—intricate woodworking, maybe incorporating metal pieces. But during my research, I kept getting drawn to these angular, short, and simple wooden chairs. There was something so clean and enjoyable about them. I focused on exploring shapes and the intersections of lines, drawing inspiration from origami, triangles, and how different forms could emerge by combining them. Typically, I explore a lot of organic shapes and look to nature for inspiration, but there was something really fun about working with simple forms and geometry in this project. I experimented with many different shapes and ultimately landed on this amalgamation of triangles for the legs.
Another thing that kept drawing me back to this design was the idea of incorporating a number as a guiding principle. Four is my favorite number, and I wanted it to act as a kind of governing rule throughout the piece. I definitely bent that rule a little, but I think it still holds. The back and seat of the chair each have four corners, the domino joints on each side are four, each leg has four outer corners, and together the legs have four inner corners. In total, there are four main pieces. I found it both limiting and liberating to have a number dictate certain design decisions—it created a quiet sense of rhythm and consistency across the chair. Even in moments where the number wasn't visually obvious, it was present in the structure or underlying concept.
