Spora
The Table

A functional, sculptural piece inspired by wild mushrooms, with a walnut egg-shaped top and stem-like leg that reflect growth and a connection to nature.

Created during my sophomore spring semester alongside my Arcadia The Light  project, the Spora Table draws inspiration from the structural beauty of wild mushrooms. While Arcadia explored texture, this piece focuses on form and balance—particularly the stem-like strength found in fungi.

Crafted from walnut and shaped extensively on the lathe, the process of making this table was as much about learning as it was about design. The resulting form—a sculptural egg-shaped top supported by a central turned leg—echoes the organic elegance and quiet resilience of mushroom stems.

More than just functional, the Spora Table is a celebration of growth, craft, and a deepening connection to nature. It invites daily use while telling a story through shape, material, and intention.

Top and Bottom Pieces

I started by gluing three walnut planks together to create a thick enough block for the lathe. For the top and bottom pieces, I cut them to shape on the bandsaw and used a router to soften the edges. I drilled large holes in both the top and bottom pieces, then turned the ends of the leg on the lathe to form tenons that would fit snugly into those holes. After a dry fit, I glued everything together and added wooden plugs for extra strength and stability. I initially added a wax finish which i ended up removing and using stain and polyeurthane spray to finish the piece.
